Holy Cow! I'm Here!

Hey family! so its my first week in El Salvador! it has been crazy. So
Mondays are p days... Today.. i am typing really slow because these
key boards are really weird..jaja but every things good now! The first
day, we just went straight to a house to sleep. We arrived in El
Salvador like at nine and  the airport was like an hour from where we
were so we just slept.
The next day we had like this training thing at the presidents house. We
went to get our "green cards" so now i am a legal resident of El
Salvador. We had some meetings like all day just trying to figure
everything out.. what to eat, what not to eat. They gave us a bottle of
pepto and sent us off. the norm... jaja. I met my new comp!  His name
is Elder Coy. He is so awesome. Everyone says to me that I got the
best trainer that i could´ve had. he`s from Guatemala and he doesn`t
speak a lick of English.. so i`m learning a lot more than I was in the
mtc. He`s teaching me all the slang and stuff.  because the people
here speak somewhat in a form called vos..its super informal and stuff
but to understand people, you need to understand vos..but the thing is,
they don´t know how to speak it correctly.. so they only use some
words in vos and some not in vos... its weird.. they say stuff in this
country that they don´t say anywhere else.. like they just say buenas
for buenas noches etc. and for adios, they say salud.  chivo for cool
while in every other country its different.. just stuff that you could
have never learned in the states. Anyway!!
The first day with him, we went to the temple in the capitol. (I´m in
an area called zacamil, about twenty min from the capitol)It was
awesome. the open house is still going on so it was cool. Then we went
with this family to eat dinner....pupusas... they were awesome...
until that night... crap.... well anyway, I threw up all night. i´ve
never felt so sick in my entire life.
That next day, I felt horrible. i felt like I could barley walk. I was
hurting like a mother bear. but we went to the temple again to be
guides for the people, but I basically just sat in a chair the whole
time.. but that´s not even the worst part.
THEN, we went through the temple a few
times and spent an unusually large amount of time in one of the sealing
rooms, while my comp told me about his girlfriend and how they already
have a wedding date(she´s serving in Nicaragua)... I was
like... awww man. I sat in a chair for the
rest of the day, found a nurse and slept the whole afternoon... That
night.. I was like, I´ll give this place one month... because I was
seriously hating life.
The next morning, I asked for some help, I was feeling a bit better,
and they day could not have been more perfect.  don´t test the Lord...
because he´ll come down on you with a snap of the finger... so I was
like, ok...that was fast, you got me, i´ll stay. I forgot everything
about the day before, We taught people, someone accepted a date to be
baptized and it was absolutely amazing.  She´s going to be baptized
the 6 of august and I couldn´t have been more excited. Losing yourself
in the work, it works. I read and re read those verses in Alma 38:2-3
dad sent me and I think about pres hinkley´s dad and I forget myself
and work. And that night, I heard speed of sound on the radio. I don´t
think i´ve ever been happier. Thank you for the tender mercies of the
Lord!  It is crazy.  (very heavy American influence here) I love it
here. the people are so humble and loving.  totally a different
culture.  We are teaching this one family, the first time i went, i
thought this girl was the only one living there. she had a little girl
and was pregnant.  Beautiful girl.  Later my comp asked me how old i
thought she was, i guessed around 20.. i was wrong. she is 17 and
pregnant with her second child.  her first she had when she was 15.
just crazy.  We went back later to find the rest of the family there
and there were like 8 kids.  to say the least, they wanted me and my
blue eyes. they kept saying déme sus ojos(give me your eyes.) I later
asked my comp what i need to do in that situation and he said to say:
i´ll give you my blue eyes if you come to church on Sunday. jaja so
next time i know exactly what to do :)
Our apartment is D-I-R-T-Y. We were suppose to clean it today but
we´ll see how that goes. My comp says we need to go and help the
sisters clean their place.. because there house is worse than ours.
(I dunno how to send pics yet, but i´ll learn how for next week)  We
have cold showers.. just like a hose out of the wall pretty much.. but
its ok, I'd rather have it cold cuz its so hot here. it also
rains like no other. But that's OK because they say the more it
rains in your mission, the hotter your wife will be:) just kidding...
but for reals, that´s what they say.  But anyway, I will never
complain about anything in the states ever again.
Today i had one more pupusa to see if it would stay in my stomach, and
so far its been successful!
Its pretty dangerous here.. I know you were making plans to come pick
me up, but I would never let you come here.  I´m safe but I don´t
trust many people.  People like to try and take advantage of me
because i´m white. But don´t worry! I´ve never been safer in my life!
I´m loving life here!  Everyone is really into soccer.. of course..
everyone is either for barca or real. (Barcelona or Madrid) I like
barca, my comp likes real. And the American finals were yesterday.
Uruguay won. it was pretty darn cool.
Hey if you want me to send you some cool stuff, make sure some money
is in my account and i´ll get around to sending something super cool!
That's really cool that cody´s gone! or leaving! he´s gonna love it.
He´s gonna have a hard time understanding the republican Dominicans..
they speak crazy. people who have been here for 20 months say they
have a hard time understanding them.  Because they are just like
Jamaican English.. they talk with a really strong accent and shorten
all their words.. but he´ll be awesome!!
Anyway, I love you all! thanks for the prayers and support! Lemme know
whats going on!

SOOOOO CLLOOOSSSEEE!

Mt. View Missionaries!

Hey family!

So first on my list of things to write home about is about El Pato.  Pato = Duck in Spanish! No wonder there's a duck on the can of that sauce of deliciousness.  So anyway, last Friday we were playing futból (that's Spanish for soccer for you Americans out there) and it was raining a bit so the field was wet.  I was going for the ball, sliding on the grass and then my foot caught and I rolled over the top of it.  At first it felt like it was broken.  It felt like it did when I broke my wrist and/or dislocated my finger... so at the time, I was thinking it was a combination of both... So I was on crutches for all day Friday and then limped around the next couple days... Then, on Tuesday, I was back on the field for the pride of El Salvador. So no worries, not broken, I just had it taped and played.. It was epic, to say the least. Also, I got my travel plans!!! I'm still leaving on Monday, I fly to Dallas and then to El Salvador.  We leave the MTC at like 5 in the morning and then we have like a 5 hour layover in Dallas from like noon to 4:30 ish... something like that... so I'll give you a call sometime during the layover:)  So everything's just about packed up for me! I sent a towel and the fleece lining to my rain jacket home because they were heavy and I have a sweater and three other towels:) So we  gave ourselves spirit animals for the elders in my district... I am a koala bear, my comp is a rhino, the kid that does parkour is a pit bull, the other kid from mesa is a hyena, tucker is a meerkat, and there's three others who are a husky, gazelle, and lizard. I dunno why I'm a koala... my ears move when I eat ? who knows... I also had my first soda since I was 12... I thought I was gonna die... I got sicker than a.... sick thing normally does... jaja:) Anyway, the Elders convinced me because they said I'm gonna have to drink a lot of coke in El Salvador.  Joke time: What did one muffin say to the other when he said, "gosh its warm in here"???? Answer: "oh my gosh! A talking muffin!"  jaja... Something cool I learned this week: might be coincidence but who knows.. so the first settlements of people on the earth were like the middle east, India,  northern Africa and Asia.  We currently do not have missionaries there right now.. well we do in some places, but not all.  Anyway, its just kinda cool because in the scriptures it says the first shall be the last and the last shall be the first... fun fact for you there..jaja.

I'm also finding out that a lot of missionaries have a motto... like Andrew's was "go shake hell".. and stuff like that.. I haven't figured out mine yet... but I like what one elders was.. he was in my zone before he left last week. anyway: "Don't give in. Don't let up" I like it... but I'll let you know when I find mine:)  So that package that you put in my bag to open in El Salvador? I opened it today when I was packing... THANK YOU!!! That was the coolest thing and I was so stoked about it! Why was I not suppose to open it until now? I love it. Thank you thank you thank you:) And that was cool that you put that song by Sara Evans in Spanish.. that's legit:) I'm sorry I didn't have enough time to write you all individually.. we had a lot to do today to get ready to go...!!!

Mum, Thanks for everything that you do for me and all the preparing that you put me through and making me do stuff I didn't always wanna do.  Thanks for the consistent like 2Xweek letters that you've sent me. Thanks for making that book for me. Thanks for getting me ready to go. Thanks for teaching me all that you did.  I love you, mum.

That goes the same for you too, dad:) And happy birthday coming up:)

Austin, you're a stud.

Ellie, don't be a silly goose.

Brynn, Don't be the third Jackson twin with dreadlocks:)

I Love you all!

Almost There!

Hey family!

jeez... what a crazy week!  So during the week I write down things that I need to write home about.  I forgot one last week and it was about the Tour de France! Is it over yet? Who won? Who's winning? Which team is doing good? I wanna know it all!

And I'll send a list of "Thorntonisms" next week.. We were just waiting to the end of the MTC to make a list of them all and copy it for all of us.  I also decided that when I get home, I wanna learn french, Portuguese and Italian... I dunno, It just makes sense to know languages! Hearing everyone here and their cool languages makes me wanna learn more of them!  jaja... So for the 4th , we had a special celebration where we sang stuff like Yankee doodle and heard some talks about the declaration and the Founding fathers... Then we went outside and watched the fireworks for the Stadium of Fire... That thing in the BYU stadium.. Pretty cool... Just made me want to be at Lake Powell with all of you... Oh well!  Also I forgot to mention that there's this cool elder form Mozambique here and he speaks like 5 languages! He's so legit... I wanna be him.. or just black... jaja. Also, fun fact: I've really been working on moving my ears.  I'm getting really good.  On Sunday, Dallin H Oaks's daughter came and played the violin for us.  I guess she's like pro and stuff... absolutely amazing.  Best devotional I've been to here at the MTC.  Maybe even better than the apostles coming.  I just learn so much more through music..Her name is Jenny Oaks Baker btw... in case you were wondering. Also, I did decide that Spanish is pretty darn awesome. There are 5 words for love in Spanish and each means a different thing.  So Spanish = boss. I also found the tree that I was told about.  The tree that smells like red cream soda!  Its insane.  I want one.  There's no place like the MTC.  There's 52,225 missionaries in 340 missions around the world.  Missionary work is the life blood of the church.  According to Pres Monson.  There's no place like the MTC.  There's no spirit like the MTC.  It is absolutely amazing.  Though I'm excited to leave, I know I won't be able to come back ever again.. Unless as an old man, but its different then.. anyway! Sorry this 1st paragraph is all choppy, it always is... I just try to get through all the things I really need to tell you! One last thing: a kid broke his ankle in basketball, it was insane. It looked like my finger when I dislocated it.  And then another crazy story happened but I already wrote it and its in the mail... Its a miracle story.  I guess you could say that I'm experiencing things I've never experienced before, now that I'm on a mission...jaja... the letter is very drama filled and long! You can tell whoever, it doesn't really have to do with me, I just don't have time to write it on this email!

Mum, I've started probiotics. That plan of salvation thing that you gave me works wonders! Especially for like 5 min lessons on the entire plan of salvation. Thank you! Also, You all should watch elder Holland's talk "Safety for the Soul" again... its so good!.  I also want the picture of when I left and everyone was looking out the window at waffle house? Is that cool? Yeah Jill wrote me! And I understood all of her "Spain Spanish" so that was pretty cool. I wrote her back in Latin American Spanish." But all is well in Zion! send pics of Lake Powell!

I'm sorry I don't have time to write you all but I'll attach to my handwritten letter....:)
I love you all and hope you had a safe trip back and a good holiday. ~T

2 1/2 weeks left!

Hola familia! Como estan? Everything's good here! Last week I met my Mission president and his wife. That was really cool! He's a really cool guy and I can't wait to get out there.  He said there's a new system for training new elders that they've tried in like 6 different countries and it brings out great results! So in short, I will be ready to train someone within two transfers.  So that's pretty cool! Also I shook Elder Christofferson's hand last week! That was awesome!  Then I saw L Tom Perry coming out of the bathroom so that was insane.  Big Man, he is! Also last week, Elder Bednar talked to us about becoming a Preach My Gospel missionary.  That was very helpful.  Then he gave us an apostolic blessing, which was very powerful.  That basically means that he put his hands on all of our heads and pronounced this blessing upon all of us.  Sick.  Then Sunday we had another fireside where Stephen Allen talked to us about how to handle change and to never give up.  Also,  I'm finally completely released from being a ZL.  No more training, no more meetings, I'm free!  Tucker got moved into my district as well so that's pretty cool.  That was a nice surprise:)  Also question: What happens when a letter you send comes back to you and says return to sender?  That happened with a letter to Katie but it came back so I just put it in the mail again... I hope that's what you do...jaja:) I also got to host yesterday!  Which means I get to greet all the new missionaries coming in.  I got to see my buddy Christian and Reece came in yesterday as well.  I saw both of them and that was really cool.  Then I hosted a guy going to my mission and a guy from Italy... but he didn't talk much..soooo.. lo que sea.    Today we saw some elder try and get a sister's address to write her! It was the funniest thing I've ever seen! jaja.  Then he walked by her and gave her his address.  So now I know what not to do;) jaja.

Mum, thanks for the package!  the shoes are perfect.  I just have one more request before I leave here.  I kinda want the other reflections of Christ book.  The first project.  I know you just sent me a package and you're going to lake Powell, but if it be possible, Could you send me that book as well? I know its a lot to ask for again, and a huge inconvenience,  i love you mum! your the best.. if you can't make that happen, its cool..Seriously. Those projects have just helped me through some tough times and bring things into perspective for me and there's no doubt they'll be hard times on the mish.. But don't make the mistake of thinking something is wrong right now, Everythings fantastic! The best!

Dad, are you getting ready for lake Powell? or are you already there? I dunno if you remember but while I was at school, you sent me a text with the scripture Alma 38:2-3 on it.  I came across it the other day and it made me cry.  Thanks dad! your the best.  That scripture has got me out of a lot of hard times at school, here, just anywhere hard, so thank you.

Austin, thanks for the pics and letter! I'll send a letter if there's time.

Ellie, Thanks for the letter! and the union jack bear and the scripture marker! You're awesome.  Stay fresh.  Don't be a giant snapping turtle:)

Brynn, I have a confession.   I've been slacking on putting your bear in pictures.  But I promise I'll do better.  I just forgot about it for about a week and a half so none of my pictures have any but I'll start putting them in now. Sound ok? Love you!

I Love you all!

Week 5

Que pasa ese!

Hey family! Its P-day again... already.  Its crazy. I don't really comprehend time here. The days seem like years but the weeks seem like hours.  So important new events: the nitty gritty.  The apóstoles are here this week along with the first presidency.  All of the new mission presidents are here and getting set apart, or trained or whatever they do with them.  Its really cool!  Some kids in my district saw Elder Holland yesterday and waved at him as he was driving away.  Sick!  My roommates just came into the room and started yelling that they just brushed shoulders with Elder Oaks! Insane.  So I should be able to meet my mission president this week so that´s pretty dang sweet.  So my roommates starting doing this thing.  Its called the "Thorntonism of the day. "  Apparently they think  I have good quotes.   Funny quotes.. I guess.. who knows with them.. jaja.  We did an endowment session today and that was really cool.  I learned a whole bunch about all of the symbolism everywhere.  Lots of elders here know a lot about it and explained it to me, so that was really cool.  Also I got released as a zone leader so that´s a huge load off my shoulders.  We´re training the new ones this week and then I´m free at last!  Finally get to study and stuff like a normal missionary.  Anyway!  that´s the gist of what´s been happening here!

Mum, thanks for the pictures and letters and the book you sent! That was really cool to get.  Also, Still cool you´re learning Spanish! We´ll be able to talk and stuff, jaja.  Also, sometime before I leave here I´ll be able to call home so that will be in like 3ish weeks.  Just a heads up.  I´m leaving the 18th of July.  Also, I don´t know where to send a letter so that it´ll get to Mons.  He sent me a letter and I don´t have his new address. Can you get it for me?  Thanks!  Those pictures looked awesome! Elk Ridge looks like a blast.  Well, Thanks for everything mum!  I wouldn't be here without you.

Dad, wasshappenin?  YOU GOT INTO POINT TO POINT? Park city? that's so cool!  I've heard that that's the big race to do..  That's so cool.  and Lance is doing it too?  That will be a blast!  How much climbing is it?  What's your goal for time?  What's lance's?  That's so cool.  And you've been riding 6 days a week? You animal.  Like I said, THE DIESEL.  Legit.  Thanks for the letter and the pictures and stuff and keep taking pictures so I can see what you're up to and stuff!  That's awesome that all those jobs are starting to come in.  The Lord's blessing us as always!  Don't let it go to waste! Pray about everything.  So I've got this workout that I started doing,  the original is like 600 push-ups a day but I tried to cut that in half to 300 and I still couldn't do it... but I will!  I'll be huge when I'm back! jaja You, Craig and Austin better watch out! jaja.  Well thanks for everything dad! You taught me how to work and very grateful for it so thank you!

Austin, I'll send you a letter: but I would like you to send me one more thing before you send the package.  lyrics to "I can see the Light" from Tangled.  That's all I do here is sing because we can't listen to music but I don't know any of the words!

Ellie, don't be Harry Potter and the prisoner of marzapan.  *(We love PSYCH- if you watch it- you will understand )

Brynn,  stay happy OK?

Girls: I'm sorry I don't have a lot of time so I'll write a letter

I love you all! Stay fresh.

Half Way There!

Wasssup, what's happenin'?!  How was bears ears? It sounded like it was a blast and stuff.   Every thing's still good here! Just living the dream as always.  Comp and I are just chillin here in the computer lab typing as fast as we can... he's a lot faster than I am.. Jaja.

Mum, HIIIII! How's it going?  I hope everything's going well.  Yes, I've had a haircut... not nearly as good as when you do it but it still wasn't bad.  Yeah I share a room with three other Elders including my comp.  We have 2 bathrooms on our floor that are shared by everyone on our floor. It kinda stinks when your waiting in line and stuff.. but you know, whatever.  I think I sent you a letter of describing my comp and stuff but I can answer more questions if you want!  I think I'm gonna send my card home today for pictures.. I don't want to have to pay to get them developed.. jaja. Also, (this is super duper importante) I'm gonna send my five fingers home.  They didn't stretch like my first pair and I don't like this model.  So, can you get me a new pair? The one's that I had before? They're the women's KSO black size 42.  And yes they have to be women's.  That would be so awesome if you could do that for me! Thanks mum, you're the best! And that's way cool that you stayed in Flag and stuff and ate at Fratelli's and stuff.  It's some pretty darn good stuff:)

Dad, HIIII! How goes it?  How's the riding going?  Were you able to sneak out of bears ears for a bike ride at MOAB?? I sure hope so.. that would have been awesome.. thanks for sending me the Honey Stinger waffle about a week ago.. That was awesome:)  I ate it right away! I don't think I've been more excited.. jaja.. well, I hope everythings going well! Put in a few miles for me next time you go:)  Also, you should have your priests start to memorize D&C 4.  Its 7 verses but its all about missionary work and I think that its important for them to know.. I just memorized it in Spanish last week and it was well worth the time spent. Also, happy Father's Day on Sunday!!  I'll send a letter to you as well.  You're the best dad!

Austin, What's going on stud? I'll send a letter..

Ellie, How's it going cutie pie? Are you keeping those boys away?  Make them work for you.. Jaja just kidding..  I hope everythings going awesome with your summer!  Filled with water activities etc.  Are you excited for lake Powell?  You better be! I think you're gonna clear the wake this trip. :)

Brynn, Hey cutie pootutie! How's your summer going so far?  I hope its going great!  Are you swimming across the street a lot? I sure hope so.. How does it feel outside? Super warm? Well, tell me what's been going on!

Roxy,  Hey good girl! What you doin? Nice dog:)  Listen Roxy, I know you're getting old but you cannot die until I get back.. Don't you wanna see me?  Just hang in there and I'll see you soon.

Trader, What are you  doing crazy white dog? You're pretty alright... just stay frisky!

Shaggy, You're a spaz but that's OK.. I'm just glad you're not my spaz.. Jaja.. But you're pretty alright too... I guess.. Jaja just kidding:)

Well anyway, Things are great here! My comp and I should be getting released from Zone leaders here pretty quickly.  Its gonna take a huge load off my shoulders.  today's P-day! Went to the temple this morning.  It was awesome.  Rosemary Wixom came to talk to us on Tuesday.. The general primary president... That was very cool.  We got to sing primary songs and taught me a ton. I really liked how she stressed what a privilege it was to be able to wear Jesus Christ's name on our chest (mine says Jesucristo)  But it was really really good! Jesucristo es mi mejor amigo:)

"I'm glad they called me on a mission,

Look at me, I've grown a foot or two,

I hope that now I am ready,

To preach and teach and do as missionaries do"

I love you all!
